Patna (Bihar) [India], September 4 (ANI): Janta Dal (United) spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad on Wednesday said that despite the West Bengal Assembly passing the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’, if stringent action is not taken on all levels of the government regarding crimes against women, then women safety would not be ensured in the West Bengal.
“There are so many provisions, so many laws to prevent and punish crimes against women, so if the state government has the will to implement them and if the laws are used properly by the government then anywhere from what happened in Sandeshkhali to the rape and murder of the woman doctor in Kolkata would not happen”, said the JD(U) spokesperson.
He further said that despite making a new law, the safety of women would not be ensured if corrupt officers are not disciplined.
“If you make a law, and your intentions are not good, if you can’t get your party members to be with you, and if you can’t discipline the corrupt officers who are not implementing these laws, then you won’t be able to give safety to the women in the state”, he added.
The JD(U) leader also criticised Mamata Banerjee and said that she had tried to finish the case as soon as possible without a thorough investigation, “How Mamata ji from the start tried to get rid of this case as soon as possible, and after that the environment which was created in Bengal, so this is just a way to divert and divide attention.”
On Tuesday, the West Bengal Assembly unanimously passed the ‘Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024’.
TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said that “history” has been created in the West Bengal legislative assembly.
“For the first time a bill has been passed by Mamata Banerjee led government to provide stringent punishment to those involved in incidents of rape and murder. The Governor of West Bengal should provide assent to the bill,” Kunal Ghosh said.
The Bhartiya Janata Party had called the legislation as “unconstitutional” and said that the Bengal Chief Minister is doing “dramabaazi”.
Union MoS and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said, “Mamata Banerjee is doing ‘dramabaazi’. The legislation brought today is unconstitutional. There is already a central law which has the provision of the death penalty. So the legislation brought by Mamata Banerjee today is only ‘dramabaazi’. This legislation will be challenged in Supreme Court and it will be cancelled.” (ANI)
